Man sentenced in federal pornography case

Jan 30, 2013 (The Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- EAST ST. LOUIS -- Sexual abuse charges in Madison County remain pending against a former Alhambra man who was sentenced last week to 15 years in prison on a child pornography charge.

Gary A. McArthur, 50, was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis to a term of 15 years in prison on a one-count indictment charging him with production of child pornography, said Stephen R. Wigginton, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.

McArthur also was ordered to serve a term of lifetime supervised release following his imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.

Additionally, McArthur was fined $1,250 and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment. McArthur pleaded guilty to the indictment on Oct. 18 and has been held without bond since his arraignment June 15.

Documents indicate that the violation occurred between September 2011 and March 31, 2012, when McArthur lived with a woman and her 13-year-old female relative at his residence on Elm Street in Alhambra.

On March 31, 2012, the woman told the Madison County Sheriff's Department she had discovered that McArthur had been engaged in a continuing sexual relationship with the 13-year-old.

In a recorded interview with the Sheriff's Department, McArthur admitted to having sexual intercourse with the girl for several months.

McArthur is charged in Madison County Circuit Court with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for those acts. Local prosecutors have the option of pursuing the charges or dismissing them in the wake of the federal action. McArthur has a Feb. 4 court date in the county.

The federal charges came about after McArthur was arrested, when a detective with the Madison County Sheriff's Department who also serves as a special investigator with the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force performed a forensic examination of McArthur's cellular phone. The phone contained a pornographic photograph of the victim depicting the minor's nude genital area.
