LHS ties up Bulldogs, 62-12

Jan 25, 2013 (The Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- La Grande grapplers defeat Baker and Payette BAKER CITY -- The La Grande wrestling team dominated the mat Thursday night in a pair of duels in Baker City.

The Tigers beat rival Baker 62-12 before disposing of Payette 68-12. LHS lost a total of four matches on the night.

"It was a great night overall," head coach Klel Carson said. "The kids have been working hard, so it was great to see all of that hard work pay off. It was a lot of fun." Against Baker, Corey Isaacson (106 pounds) and Grayson Smith (113) both picked up wins via forfeit, before Jared Neiss defeated Zach Valentine at 120 pounds and Tyler Isaacson defeated Josh Valentine at 126 pounds.

Ryan Middleton earned a 6-2 decision in the 132-pound bout, while Cole Laci (138) and Nic Kavanaugh (140) both won via forfeits.

Creed Smith had a 5-2 decision victory at 152 pounds, earning praise from his coach.

"I thought Creed really had a breakthrough tonight," Carson said.

Preston Armstrong, Dylan McHargue, Leon Fuller and Dylan Reece also picked up victories against the Bulldogs.

The only losses La Grande suffered against Baker were at 220 pounds and 195 pounds. Carson didn't have full results from the duel against Payette, but he said the Tigers won every match except the 138-pound bout and the 152-pound match.

"This was our first duel in the district. It was kind of a tune-up for Saturday," the coach said.

The Tigers will complete at the Homedale (Idaho) duels this weekend where they will wrestle five duels on Saturday.
