OpenDNS Secures Third Consecutive Year of More Than 100% Sales Growth

San Francisco, CA, Jan 29, 2013 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- OpenDNS, the world's leading provider of cloud-delivered Internet security solutions, today announced that for the third consecutive year, the company has grown by more than 100%, year over year, for its business security services, which launched in November of 2009. The services use OpenDNS's global footprint and view of the Internet to protect enterprises from Internet-based security attacks generally classified as malware, botnets and phishing. Unlike many other cloud/SaaS companies, OpenDNS has fueled its rapid growth in headcount, R&D and worldwide datacenter expansions through operating activities.

The company's fast-paced growth has been driven by high demand for its cloud-based Internet security service for businesses, named Umbrella, which fills an emerging and growing gap in Internet security by effectively securing distributed offices and nomadic users. Legacy enterprise security appliance vendors often fall short of delivering a viable solution when mobile devices, cloud applications and a highly distributed workforce are in play, which is increasing in frequency within today's business world.

During 2012, OpenDNS added 3,500 new business customers, while achieving a 97% annual renewal rate from existing customers. The company also moved to a new corporate headquarters with 50% more office space. OpenDNS expects to break ground on an expansion later this year to yet-again double the office space to make room for another 100+ employees.

"The incredible demand we've seen for Umbrella validates that the market is ready to embrace a new way to deliver Internet security," said David Ulevitch, CEO and founder of OpenDNS. "Businesses can no longer assume that workers are using secured devices in the office or corporate managed networks - companies need a solution that protects users wherever they are - on any device or network, including Wi-Fi hotspots. Umbrella delivers a secure connection anywhere, every time, with unmatched performance, reliability and continuous security policy enforcement." In 2012 OpenDNS grew its staff by nearly 60% and expanded its executive team with the addition of Dan Hubbard as CTO. In addition, Marc Gemassamer has joined OpenDNS as VP of Worldwide Sales to help rapidly scale the growing sales team, and Martin Johnson joined the company as Head of Marketing.

The consumerization of IT is an unstoppable force, according to PWC. A recent PWC global survey of CIOs found that 28% of their workforce is currently using personal devices for work-related tasks and this percentage is expected to rise to 35% by mid-2013. One of Gartner's Top 2013 Predictions is that "through 2014, employee-owned devices will be compromised by malware at more than double the rate of corporate-owned devices." About Umbrella Umbrella from OpenDNS protects users everywhere against malware, botnets and phishing regardless of location or device. This includes nomadic users on iPhones, iPads and Windows and Mac laptops. Unlike traditional hardware and software-based products that reduce performance by backhauling traffic through hardware applications or slow VPNs, cloud-delivered Umbrella actually improves performance through a lightweight combination of DNS routing and selective proxying.
