University of Kentucky Research Foundation Assigned Patent

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 26 -- The University of Kentucky Research Foundation, Lexington, Ky., has been assigned a patent (8,357,309) developed by five co-inventors for a "class of ferromagnetic semiconductors." The co-inventors are Larysa Shlyk, Lexington, Ky., Sergly Alexandrovich Kryukov, Lexington, Ky., Lance Eric De Long, Lexington, Ky., Barbara Schupp-Niewa, Hallbergmoos, Germany, and Rainer Niewa, Hallbergmoos, Germany.
The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "Single crystal and polycrystal oxoruthenates having the generalized compositions (Ba.sub.z,Sr.sub.1-z)Fe.sub.xCo.sub.yRu.sub.6-(x+y)O.sub.11 (1.ltoreq.(x+y).ltoreq.5; 0.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.1) and (Ba,Sr)M.sub.2.+-.xRu.sub.4.-+.xO.sub.11 (M=Fe,Co) belong to a novel class of ferromagnetic semiconductors with applications in spin-based field effect transistors, spin-based light emitting diodes, and magnetic random access memories."
