Boston Networks design robust communications infrastructure for the 250,000m2 Shetland Gas Plant

Jan 24, 2013 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The Shetland Gas Plant facility will occupy an area of approximately 540,000m2 of which the plant will occupy 250,000m2. The new gas processing plant, being built as part of TOTAL's Laggan-Tormore development with its joint venture partner Dong Energy, will be adjacent to the existing Sullom Voe Terminal and will be the main processing plant for gas from the Laggan and Tormore fields, located approximately 125km North West of the Shetland Islands.

The Shetland Gas Plant will utilise the very latest technologies and demand a communication infrastructure to be both robust and scalable, to support the plant and ensure it delivers optimum performance, even in highly challenging environments.

Boston Networks has designed a solution to support voice and data throughout the first critical buildings within the plant, including the Gatehouse, Administration buildings and the Workshop.

Both gas fields are located on the edge of the UK continental shelf where water depths descend rapidly from an average of 120m to 600m and beyond, presenting a uniquely challenging environment to operate in but also with great potential.

The technical challenges associated with transporting the gas, over such vast distances to shore, push the boundaries of conventional tie back technology. In fact, Laggan-Tormore will be the longest deep water tie back to the shore anywhere in the world.

Working to tight deadlines, to ensure the plant is fully prepared to receive gas in spring 2014, the Boston team will begin the project early 2013 working closely alongside construction partners GA Barnie, Morrison Construction and Petrofac.
