BRIEF: Video shows San Rafael robbery as gunman fires at employees

Jan 22, 2013 (The Marin Independent Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- San Rafael police are investigating an armed robbery where a gunman fired at employees as they fled to a back room.

The robbery occurred at about 7 p.m. Saturday at Variedades Cellular, a phone and check-cashing business at 26 Medway Road in the Canal area, police said. Three employees were in the store when the gunman entered and demanded money.

As the workers retreated to a back room with bulletproof glass, the robber tried to follow them and fired his gun, narrowly missing one of the workers, said San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher.

The robber fled right after firing the gun, and no injuries or losses were reported.

The robber was described as 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and in his late 20s or early 30s. He had a heavy build and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information about the robber can call San Rafael police at 485-3000. A video of the robbery is at www.sprd.org.

Tipsters can also call the multilingual Bay Area Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-222-8477, where they can leave information anonymously and possibly be eligible for a cash reward.
