First Firefox OS smartphones announced

(UPI Science News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A small Spanish start-up company called GeeksPhone has announced the first smartphones running the Firefox mobile operating system from Mozilla.

Consumers will have to wait a bit, though, as GeeksPhone is only selling the devices to developers who want to start building and testing apps for the OS platform, ZDNet reported Tuesday.

GeeksPhone says it will offer two phone models running the browser-based OS, the "Keon" and the "Peak." The Keon will come with a 1 GHz processor, a 3.5-inch touchscreen display, 3-megapixel camera and 4GB of internal storage.

The Peak will feature a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 4.3-inch display, 8-megapixel camera on the rear and 4GB of internal storage.

"Developer preview phones will help make the mobile Web more accessible to more people," Stormy Peters, director of developer engagement at Mozilla, said in a blog post Tuesday. "Developers are critical to the Web and to Mozilla's mission to make the Web accessible to everyone." Copyright 2013 United Press International, Inc. (UPI).
