SpringNet® deploys Transmode for ROADM based Flexible Optical Network

(Thomson Reuters ONE via COMTEX) -- Stockholm, Sweden and Dallas, Texas - 22nd January 2013 - Transmode, a global supplier of packet-optical networking solutions, today announced that SpringNet, a high performance metro service provider and division of City Utilities of Springfield, Missouri, has very rapidly upgraded its optical network by deploying a next generation network based on Transmode's TM-Series platform with its ROADM based Flexible Optical Networking technology.

SpringNet offers metro-Ethernet services to its customers in the Springfield metropolitan area over its own optical network spanning approximately 428 route miles. SpringNet has deployed Transmode's optical networking solution as a Flexible Optical Network ring designed for 40 channels in order to upgrade the existing WDM network and meet the future demands of customers.

Due to the quick delivery times and the easy installation and commissioning procedures of Transmode's TM-Series, the project moved very quickly from initial vendor selection through an open tender in September 2012 to a live network by the end of November 2012. The upgraded network carries a mix of OC-12, OC-48, Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet and 10GbE traffic.

"Our aim is to deliver flexible, scalable and innovative services to our customers both quickly and efficiently. To do this we needed to replace our existing network," said Chris Yates, Operations & Engineering Manager at SpringNet. "The previous network required extensive manual intervention to deploy new services and added complexity and long term maintenance costs. Our need was for an easily managed and cost efficient network. The new ROADM network saves time and resources and makes it easier to deploy new services efficiently as we can now add/drop any wavelength from and to any port from our Network Operations Center." SpringNet has not only deployed Transmode's ROADM technology but has also increased its management efficiency with the introduction of Transmode's Enlighten(TM) multi-layer management suite, which makes provisioning and maintenance complexities much easier to navigate as well as giving real time views of its network showing power levels and circuit design.

Paul Harrison, Transmode's Vice President North America, commented, "Our Flexible Optical Networking technology has transformed the level of flexibility and scalability that SpringNet has in its optical network. This flexibility and scalability enables customers like SpringNet to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction while having a network that will allow for future growth. This is another great example of how Transmode is bringing innovation to network operators of all sizes across the region."
