BRIEF: Bear spotted in Moon Township

MOON TWP., Jan 21, 2013 (Beaver County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A bear looking for a snack probably isn't going to find one at the grocery store.

But no one bothered to explain that to the black bear that was spotted in the parking lot of Moon Plaza shopping center late Sunday afternoon.

Moon police said several witnesses saw the bear -- estimated to be 300 pounds -- amble through the shopping center's parking lot, near Giant Eagle, around 5:30. The bear then crossed University Boulevard, headed towards the campus of Robert Morris University.

RMU spokesman Jonathan Potts said Moon police contacted the university's police department, which stepped up patrols on campus.

"They didn't see anything, and they didn't get any reports of the bear being spotted on campus," Potts said Sunday night.

The bear was spotted near Thorn Run Road a while later, according to a call to Moon police, which issued a robo-call to residents, cautioning them to stay away from the bear if it was nearby.
