The city, over 12 years, has invested in public improvements along the Wapsipinicon River to develop the community's recreation, tourism and economic potential. And more to come. lll DEAD TREES SALVAGED: Johnson County and the University of Iowa are collaborating to make some positive use of 24 acres of dead and dying non-native trees in the county's F.W. Kent Park near Tiffin. The UI will turn many of the trees, planted by the county in the 1960s for beautification and to expand habitat, into biomass to be burned with coal in the university's steam-generating boilers. That plan also will move the UI closer to its goal of 40 percent of energy needs provided through sustainable sources. A logger is buying some trees for lumber. County officials plan to replant with native species. lll STRAYS: The Iowa Humane Alliance, a non-profit founded in 2008, opened its regional clinic in Cedar Rapids last week.
