Sandy Hook inspires MHS fundraiser

Jan 14, 2013 (The Dominion Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- THE FASHION SHOW benefit will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the MHS auditorium. Donations of $5 will be taken at the door. Those who want to contribute more can write a check to the Beta Theta Pi Foundation, with Caroline Previdi's name in the memo line.

Morgantown High School hopes to raise money in memory of Sandy Hook Elementary shooting victim Caroline Previdi this week at a student fashion show.

Previdi, 6, is the daughter of MHS football coach John Bowers' college fraternity brother at Bethany College, Jeff Previdi. She was among 20 students and six teachers shot and killed Dec. 14 at the Newtown, Conn., school.

Bowers' fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, created a memorial scholarship endowment in Previdi's memory. Chapter members hope to raise at least $100,000 to provide annual scholarships for students majoring in education.

"There were a lot of lives lost, unfortunately, but there were a lot of lives saved by the courageous acts of elementary teachers," Bowers said. "It's very fitting to put the scholarship funds in that direction." MHS teacher Andrea Cathell said Oliverio's Boutique contacted her about hosting a fashion show fundraiser. She knew Bowers was trying to raise money for the scholarship fund, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

"All the pieces came together," she said. "It's nice to see something good come from this tragedy." Donations of $5 will be taken at the door. Anyone who wants to contribute more can write a check to the Beta Theta Pi Foundation, with Caroline Previdi's name noted in the memo line.

Cathell said female students will model formal attire suitable for prom or homecoming. Daniel's, a menswear shop on High Street, will provide tuxedos for male students to model.

MHS students will sing and provide other entertainment for attendees during breaks. Bowers will also speak.

The fashion show is also sponsored by Morgantown Printing and Binding.
