Symphony to play musical, Hollywood favoritesJan 10, 2013 (Kerrville Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Symphony of the Hills will take out the classics and will bring Hollywood to the stage at the "Symphony Pops: From Broadway to Hollywood" performance at 7 p.m. Saturday. "We wanted to do something that was a little different from our typical concert," conductor Jay Dunnahoo said. "The pop concert format doesn't have Beethoven, Brahms or John Williams; it has those songs people hear at the movies or on Broadway." Dunnahoo said they are stepping away from the heavy classical music to something a little more mainstream that will have a broader appeal. "We're hoping to attract a whole audience full of people who have never been to a Symphony of the Hills concert," he said. In addition to popular musical pieces such as "Hair," "Chicago" and "Jesus Christ Superstar," Chris Huber, Buddy Holly impersonator with the New Buddy Holly Band, will be the guest performer at the concert. "When the Crickets parted ways with Buddy Holly, he began recording in big studios with orchestras," Dunnahoo said. "It's a really nice piece, and since he couldn't do with the Crickets, a small band, it's a little grander, a little more lush." Huber said he's never sung with an orchestra before, and he's excited for the upcoming performance. "The symphony did a show with Flash Cadillac, a rock 'n' roll band, a while back, and it was really neat to see that older rock 'n' roll played with a full symphony." Huber will sing "Raining in my Heart," "That'll be the Day" and "Peggy Sue." Hollywood selections come from popular films such as "That's Entertainment," "Titanic" and "James Bond 007." Don Crandall, head of the music department at Schreiner University, will perform variations of "I Got Rhythm" on piano. "It's interesting, fun and music people are attracted to," Dunnahoo said. Dunnahoo said in the past, the orchestra has performed pop concerts with special guests such as Policeman from New York, Flash Cadillac, Daniel Rodriguez and Donald Braswell from "America's Got Talent," but this concert differentiates because the symphony is the star performance. "It's going to focus on what we have right here, in this community, with this wonderful orchestra," Dunnahoo said.
