Snow comes down heavily, briefly in Bellingham area

Jan 10, 2013 (The Bellingham Herald (Bellingham - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The snow arrived a little later than expected Thursday, Jan. 10, as it began coming down heavily around 8:30 a.m. around the western parts of Whatcom County.

Large snowflakes were starting to pile up in some spots even in the low elevations of downtown Bellingham before 9 a.m., but most of the roads remained clear, just wet. Snow was sticking in some hilly spots such as Lakeway Drive and Woburn Street, and in the hills of Sudden Valley. Bellingham Public Works reported most roads were only wet, but snow was sticking in the Yew Street area.

Up to 2 inches were forecast to fall overnight, but temperatures remained warm enough to turn most of that to rain in places.

Temperatures in the low 30s and a lot of moisture were combining for the snow Thursday morning.

Snow showers mixed with rain were expected during the morning. The afternoon should be dry but fairly cold. Temperatures will begin to plummet Thursday night, with a chilly Friday to follow.

Snow is still possible this weekend, but forecasters are predicting it will most likely fall in areas closer to Seattle.
