Board funds tech support

KNOB NOSTER, Jan 10, 2013 (The Daily Star-Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The school board approved nearly $37,000 for districtwide technology upgrades Wednesday.

Technology department head Jeff Davis said $32,000 would replace a wireless network system.

"The system we have right now is congested. It is six years old and the space available on it is maxed out. Also, the main controller is obsolete so if it were to go out, it is not supported so I could not replace it," he said.

Davis said a new system would prevent districtwide outages.

"If there was an outage at, say, the high school, it would not affect anywhere else," he said.

The Ubiquiti system, Davis said, would allow faculty and student computers to run faster, with space to expand.

"If we did add giving laptops to middle schoolers we would have no problem supporting that with this system. We will have enough space for expansion with this system without worry for about four or five years," he said. "Also, with the new system we would have the ability to allow more staff and students to be able to bring in their own devices and connect to the network so that would save the district from having to spend the money on providing laptops in the future if it wanted." Transitioning from the old to new system will be seamless, Davis said.

"A student or anyone else wouldn't even notice," he said.

Increasing faculty computer memory will cost $5,000.

"We have 88 teacher computers right now that are running on only 1 gig of RAM and with all of the new things they are doing in the classroom with the computer the programs just can't be supported," he said.
