CalAmp to supply wireless communications network to NHEC

Jan 10, 2013 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- CalAmp Corp., a provider of wireless products, services and solutions, has been selected by the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative, or NHEC, to supply the utility with wireless communications hardware for its wide-area Smart Meter advanced metering infrastructure, or AMI.

The NHEC Smart Meter AMI project is expected to result in more accurate and timely meter readings, providing members better information about their energy usage while facilitating operational efficiencies for NHEC.

"As a cooperative, NHEC is committed to bringing the most reliable and efficient service possible to our members, which has led us to the implementation of the Smart Meter system. The CalAmp wireless network solution will help ensure a secure and reliable flow of meter data across our communications systems infrastructure, enabling better control and conservation of energy resources for our constituents," said NHEC Communications Administrator Seth Wheeler.

CalAmp's Viper SC system will serve as the vital communications link between Elster's EnergyAxis AMI concentrators and NHEC's core communications infrastructure. The extended range and coverage of the Viper system should enable NHEC to benefit from lower infrastructure costs and high data speeds over a private network for secure Smart Grid data backhaul, CalAmp said.

The long-range wireless network will span all nine counties in the NHEC service region and consist of hundreds of remote devices and dozens of base stations, including some mountain-top installations. Deployment has already begun with completion expected in mid-2013.

The solution meets NHEC's grid security and resiliency needs through its utility hardened feature set with industrial interfaces, temperature specifications, reliability and industry-leading security. These attributes allow NHEC to enjoy low maintenance costs as well as meet Critical Infrastructure Protection standards, the company added.
