Trooper C. Michael Newman, 33, of Otway, has been selected as the 2012 Trooper of the Year. Portsmouth Post Commander Lt. Karla Taulbee said the selection of Newman as Trooper of the Year is in recognition of "his outstanding service during 2012 at the Portsmouth Post." Taulbee said fellow officers stationed at Portsmouth, chose Newman based on leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude, and cooperation with his supervisor, peers and the public.

"Throughout the year, Trooper Newman has been aggressive in removing the impaired drivers off of Scioto County roadways, being one of the post leaders in OVI apprehension," Taulbee said.

Newman is now in contention for the District and State Trooper of the Year Award to be announced at a later date.

He joined the Highway Patrol in 2006, and started his career at the Wilmington Patrol Post. In 2009 he transferred to the Portsmouth Post where he is currently assigned. Newman is a graduate of Northwest High School and lives in Otway with his wife Jennifer and their two children Austin, 8, and Andrew, 5.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Radio Dispatcher Scott N. Caudill has been selected for the 2012 Ohio State Highway Patrol Telecommunications Award at the Portsmouth Dispatch Center.

Taulbee said the selection of Caudill, 31, is in recognition of "outstanding service during 2012 at the Portsmouth Dispatch Center as a Radio Dispatcher." Post Management and dispatchers/communications technicians chose Caudill based on technical job knowledge and ability, enthusiastic work attitude, teamwork, and prompt and courteous response to the public's requests for information and assistance.

Caudill joined the Highway Patrol in 2010 and has served at the Jackson and Portsmouth dispatch centers. Originally from Minford and a graduate of Minford High School, Caudill served in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Central Texas University. He and his wife Anne live in Minford with their children Peyton, 5, Easton, 3.
