Rivalry Saturday moves to Cornell

Jan 04, 2013 (The Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Rivalry Saturday is taking a one-year leave from Cedar Rapids.

Renovation to the U.S. Cellular Center has pushed the ninth installment of the six-game girls' basketball event out of the arena for the second straight year.

Cornell College is the temporary host; it was at Cedar Rapids Washington in 2012.

"They've been really good to work with, very accomodating," said event organizer Scot Moenck, coach at Maquoketa Valley. "The location should be very convenient." All 12 of the teams are .500 or better, and six of them are ranked.

The event tips off at 11:15 a.m., when Solon (6-3) faces Clear Creek Amana (5-5) in a Wamac Conference interdivisional game.

The next two games are non-conference matchups: Preston (6-2) against Springville (4-4) at 1 p.m., then Class 3A No. 4 Mediapolis (9-0) against No. 8 Mid-Prairie (4-2) at 2:45.

At 4:30 is the day's only conference matchup, and it's an important one in the Big East Conference: Bellevue (6-2, 4-1) against Northeast (6-2, 4-1).

Class 3A No. 13 Center Point-Urbana (7-3) meets No. 15 Union (4-4) at 6:15, then 3A No. 12 Mount Vernon (7-2) plays 2A No. 13 Iowa City Regina (7-1) in the finale at 8.

"These should be great games," Moenck said. "Every year, we have games that come down to the final minute or two." ___ (c)2013 The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) Visit The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) at thegazette.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
