With around 10 games in the books for most area teams, now come the games that really start to matter, the games that will affect teams' seeding for postseason play. After an up-and-down start, the Duncan boys' basketball team comes into 2013 holding onto the last spot in OKRankings.com's Class 5A top-20 poll. The Demons (5-4) are ranked 17th in their class by maxpreps.com's computer generated system. The Velma-Alma Comets look posed for another run to the state tournament as the come into the new year at 8-1 and ranked sixth by OKRankings, whose rankings are used to determine postseason seeding. Maxpreps has the Comets at No. 3 in Class A. No girls' basketball teams are currently in the top 20, not even Empire, which is 26th in Class 2A by OKRankings despite a 9-2 start. WRESTLING According to OKWrestle.com, the Duncan Demons are the fifth best team in Class 5A (seventh best in duals) coming into 2013. That ranking could certainly improve, though, as Duncan gets some of its top wrestlers back from injuries that have sidelined them since football season. Senior Markwae Sanders is Duncan's top-ranked individual as he sits in second at 113 pounds. In front of him is Collinsville's Davion Jeffries, who beat Sanders in last year's state title match. Junior Jett Gray is third at 120 pounds, senior Christian Carnahan is fourth at 152 and senior Cameron McGill (195 pounds) and sophomore Colton Jump (132) are each ranked fifth in their respective weight classes.
