Mount Baker boys, girls pin ways to victory over Lynden

Jan 03, 2013 (The Bellingham Herald (Bellingham - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Trailing 2-0 in his 152-pound match against Lynden's Ryan Mouat, Mount Baker's Alex Tyska scrambled and got Mouat on his back for one of six pins the Mountaineers logged in a 51-22 Northwest Conference victory over the Lions on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

"We focus on getting pins; everybody does," Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "That's something you coach is to get pins and not get pinned. Alex came out and got dominated, but he was able to scramble. He fought off a cradle move from their guy, and they went out of bounds, and then he ended up getting him on his back. It was a real nice turnaround in a match we weren't expecting to win." Tyska's pin came in 1 minute, 57 seconds. Also recording pins for Mount Baker (2-0, 2-0 NWC) was Shelby Miles in 44 seconds at 120 pounds, Jerremy George in 3:14 at 138 pounds, Zach Larson in 55 seconds at 145 pounds, Sterling Honeycutt in 56 seconds at 220 pounds and Jake Larsen in 1:57 at 285 pounds.

In addition to the win by Tyska, Lepper said he was pleased by a pair of freshmen who got wins -- George at 138 and Jeremiah Cronk at 132, who scored a 9-3 decision.

"Those were big wins by those guys in matches we weren't sure we would win," Lepper said.

Nick Iaconetti got a major decision at 126 pounds for Lynden, while James Cuny got a pin at 160 pounds in a match that he trailed in at the time. Ryan Meggison also got a pin at 170 pounds for the Lions (0-5, 0-3).

"Overall, I was pleased with it being the first day back in school and coming off a break," Lepper said.

Lynden next heads to the Panther Classic on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Snohomish, while Mount Baker will be at the Warden Tournament the same day.

Earlier in the evening, the Mount Baker girls' team also picked up an impressive 54-12 win over Lynden.

"We came out very aggressive," Mountaineers coach Clyde Blockley said in a phone interview. "We came out ready to go today." The Mountaineers got first-round pins from Nicole Boardman (112 pounds), Natalie Smith (118), Jessica Mata (124), Heidi Chambers (130), Lacy Cannon (155), Jamie Vanderyacht (170) and Aysha Schwinden (220).

Lynden got pins from Natalie Martinez at 106 pounds and Lisa Hernandez at 235.

Both teams are scheduled to next wrestle in the Woolley Women's Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Sedro-Woolley.
