Google Assigned Patent for Evaluating Statistical Significance of Test Statistics Using Placebo Actions
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 2 -- Google, Mountain View, Calif., has been assigned a patent (8,346,710) developed by five co-inventors for "evaluating statistical significance of test statistics using placebo actions." The co-inventors are David Xi-Kuan Chan, Edgewater, N.J., Rong Ge, Sammamish, Wash., Ori Gershony, Redmond, Wash., Tim Hesterberg, Seattle, and Diane Lambert, Berkeley Heights, N.J.

The test statistic for an action corresponds to an estimated effect that exposure to the treatment has on a likelihood that a subject will take the action. The method further includes comparing the test statistic for the desired action to the test statistics for the plurality of placebo actions, and determining whether the test statistic for the desired action is statistically significant according to the comparison. Another method includes automatically identifying placebo actions using a taxonomy that classifies subject actions or treatments, and determining test statistics for the placebo actions."

TTI Inventions C Assigned Patent
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 2 -- TTI Inventions C, Wilmington, Del., has been assigned a patent (8,346,794) developed by six co-inventors for a "method and apparatus for querying target databases using reference database records by applying a set of reference-based mapping rules for matching input data queries from one of the plurality of sources." The co-inventors are Kong Eng Cheng, Mendham, N.J., Munir Cochinwala, Far Hills, N.J., Dennis E. Egan, Westfield, N.J., Benjamin W. Falchuk, Upper Nyack, N.Y., Chiao-Wei Lee, Union, N.J., and John R. Wullert II, Martinsville, N.J.
The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "Input data queries directed at a plurality of target databases and originating from any of a plurality of sources are first converted to validated canonical forms, which are then used to query the target databases. Specifically, upon receiving an input data query, a relatively accurate reference database is selected based on the type of the input data. This reference is then queried for the input data with the intent of finding an exact matching record or a near-matching record that can be considered an exact match and thereby validating the input data. Otherwise, the requesting source is instructed to provide a new query. Once having a validated record, it is converted to a canonical form, which is then used to query the target databases intended to be searched. In a further embodiment, multiple reference databases are queried to determine a canonical form of the data or to determine multiple canonical forms of the data."

Novell Assigned Patent for Monitoring Spin Locks in Virtual Machines in a Computing System Environment
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 2 -- Novell, Provo, Utah, has been assigned a patent (8,347,290) developed by Kattiganehalli Y. Srinivasan, Princeton Junction, N.J., for "monitoring spin locks in virtual machines in a computing system environment."
The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "Methods and apparatus involve monitoring spin locks for guest devices. Fully virtualized guests have multiple virtual processors configured under the scheduling control of a hypervisor on a physical hardware platform. The hypervisor posts On CPU and CR3 load information to shared communications pages for each of the processors. A monitoring module in the guest device monitors the pages to ascertain forward progress of the processors. If forward progress is being made, the virtual processors continue to spin. If not, the CPU's control is variously relinquished. The monitoring module typifies a kernel driver so that the guest can maintain an unmodified operating system. Ticket spin locks, and their ordering, are also considered as are computations for lock owners. Other features contemplate computing systems and computer program products, to name a few."
