City will auction surplus items next week

Jan 01, 2013 (Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Bowling Green is clearing out its closets as the new year arrives.

The city will sell off surplus items during an online public auction next week. Those items include decor, office supplies and technology.

Proceeds will go to the city's General Fund, Public Information Officer Kim Lancaster said.

The sale also will clear some storage space, she said.

"It gets them out of our surplus, and it brings in money for us as well," Lancaster said.

Amounts raised can vary depending on the type of available items.

The in-person surplus auction hosted every two years can bring in tens of thousands of dollars.

Online auctions tend to have fewer items and include fewer big-ticket items, such as vehicles, which bring in large bids, Lancaster said.

The last biannual city auction included two firetrucks.

Online auction items will appeal to a wide variety of bidders, from those associated with local governments to individuals, Lancaster said.

"We get a wide variety of people who come and bid on things," she said.

More than 50 items will be available during the auction, which will take place online at www.govdeals.com, purchasing agent Marilyn Parrigin said.

The city hosts online auctions as required when surplus property is accumulated.

The advantages of hosting online auctions are that they can be put together more frequently and with smaller amounts of items, Parrigin said.

The auction opens Monday on www.govdeals.com and runs through Jan. 14. Winning bidders will be notified after that date.

Items include printers, dry erase boards, cabinets, drafting tables, desks and cubicles, office chairs, televisions, desktop computer towers, laptop computers, cellphones and accessories, a work bench with drawers, an ice machine, scanners, gym lockers, a security system, fax machines, paintings and other pictures.
