Johansen girls tamed by Los Banos offense

Dec 21, 2012 (Los Banos Enterprise (Los Banos - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- After Los Banos High's girls basketball team jumped out to an 18-4 first-quarter lead over Johansen on Wednesday, the game seemed over already.

But that was before the roles reversed to start the third quarter and Johansen closed the lead to 10 points before LB pulled away for the 53-33 win.

"We just wanted to make it fun for the audience," joked LB guard Alexis Barcellos. "We caught a little burst there." Barcellos led all scorers with 21 points (including five 3-pointers), while Jacquelin Arretche dropped a pair of 3s on her way to 12 points. The two are the main snipers of a team that lives and dies by the 3.

"A little bit of fear. A little bit. But then I figured we had them so much in the first half that we can pull it out," Arretche said. "It's kind of an every-game thing for us where we come back a little rough in the second half. We pulled it through in the fourth quarter I think." Barcellos and Arretche spend plenty of time in practice dropping 3-points from a shooting gun, and will hit the gym at lunch or after school to shoot more.

LB coach Danny Crosby tries not to rely on the 3-pointer, but his players still launch them with wild abandon -- Barcellos hit 5 of 15 attempts from beyond the arc against Johansen, Arretche was 2-of-11, and the rest of the team went 0-for-9.

"I changed the offense up to try to get away from that, but you know, I guess once a shooter, always a shooter," Crosby said. "Even the ones that aren't supposed to be shooting it are shooting it. I don't know if that's kind of contagious." The game was the second varsity game for post player Miriam Guzman, who was called up from the sophomore team as a temporary fill in for the injured Savannah Pena.

"Savannah went down, so we needed to bring another big in to help Michelle (Gutierrez) out," Crosby said. "Miriam, I think she did well. She wants to go back down to be with her teammates, which is understandable, and hopefully Savannah will be back on the 26th going into the West Coast Jamboree." The sophomore team did fine without her in a 47-6 win over Johansen's sophomores.
