City library to upgrade Internet capabilities

COLUMBUS, Dec 21, 2012 (Columbus Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A project that's expected to improve the wireless Internet at Columbus Public Library received unanimous support from the city council this week.

Monday's vote by Columbus City Council will allow an $81,778 proposal that includes upgrades to the city's computer network and installation of a new wireless Internet system to move forward.

Omaha-based Sirius Computer Solutions was hired to undertake the work, which is part of a long-term plan to improve the network's security and performance.

At the library, the new Internet system is expected to support around 650 different devices at once and could operate without password protection, allowing users to freely access a public network.

The WiFi system is expected to be operational within 30-60 days.

The improvements come as the library begins implementing a five-year strategic plan that has a focus on added technology use.

Six devices, including tablet-style computers and electronic readers, were recently purchased by the library to give patrons access to the new technology.

These devices will eventually be available for check-out and the library hopes to add more in the future.

Outside the library, the network upgrade will better support the city's mapping system and is necessary to replace the E-911 system at the police station.

The city will delay $71,000 in other technology improvements previously budgeted for 2012-13 to fund the project.
