Library opens 2013 with variety of topical programs


Dec 20, 2012 (Sun Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The New Bern-Craven County Public Library starts 2013 with variety programing that includes topics such as sign language, old photos of New Bern and ghost hunting.



The month begins with a Jan. 3 reception for the featured artist, Mike Miller of New Bern. The public exhibit begins at 7 p.m. in the Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.

The series, Reel Readers, returns Jan. 7 with the classic story of love and high society, "Anna Karenina." Coffee and doughnuts will be served at the free event. The 10 a.m. showing is rated PG-13.


That same afternoon, the "A Novel Idea" Book Discussion Club begins the year with "Beach Music"by Pat Conroy. This 1 p.m. program is also free, and copies of the book are available through the library.

The Lunch 'n Learn series returns Jan. 8 with "Sign Language Basics." Learn about American Sign Language with Wendy L. Rosen. She will cover fingerspelling, numbers and introductory signs. Bring a brown bag lunch. Desserts and beverages will be served at the noon program.

The library closes Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A second Lunch 'n Learn is Jan. 24 and features "Photos of Old New Bern" with local historian John B. Green. It is a chance to visit the glorious yesteryears of New Bern through the camera's eye. Bring a brown bag lunch and lots of questions. Desserts and beverages will be served for the noon program.

The "Saturday Afternoon at the Movies" feature begins Jan. 26 with the film "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen."A fisheries expert helps realize a sheik's vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert. This movie is rated PG-13. Popcorn and lemonade will be served for the 2:15 p.m. showing.

On Jan. 27, "Ghost Hunting Investigation" returns with the Carolina Haunted and Supernatural Enlightenment Research Society. Learn how a specific location is investigated to determine the presence of ghosts. The 3 p.m. program is free.

nJan. 26 -- Facebook Basics Computer Class. 10 a.m.

nJan. 28 -- Ebay Basics Computer Class. 2:15 p.m.
