Computer & Gaming Product Retailers in the UK Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

London, United Kingdom, Dec 17, 2012 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- The UK Computer & Gaming Product Retailers industry has faced considerable change over the past decade. Continued advances in technology, along with a corresponding decline in prices, made personal computers (PCs) more affordable. Global PC sales skyrocketed from 130 million units in 2000 to about 300 million units by 2010. Such technology gave consumers access to the latest programs and applications, with a range of new devices that effectively changed the way consumers use and integrate computers into their everyday work and lifestyle, with tablets now the fastest-growing product segment.

Businesses in this industry sell products through physical stores and may also have associated online stores. However, more so than other retail industries, the computer revenue for computer and gaming retailers has faced competitive threats from online-only sellers. Computer products are estimated to be one of the largest markets across the online retail sector. Supermarkets stocking bestselling video games have also increasingly taken sales from specialist sellers. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Andrew Johnson, "Industry revenue is expected to fall at a compound annual rate of 2.9% over the five years through 2012-13". Sales during this period were also affected by trends in real household disposable income, consumer sentiment, internet access and computer usage. Low consumer confidence and weak disposable income growth will be a significant feature of 2012-13, such that industry sales are expected to decline 2.1% to £2.45 billion.

Sales across the computer and gaming retail market will post a modest recovery over the next five years to 2017-18. Johnson adds, "Growth is expected to come from particular product segments, with tablets becoming a mainstay of the industry and gaming consoles getting a renewed boost with the release of the next generation of offerings from the main manufacturers." While demand for computer and gaming equipment will remain strong, sales growth will be hindered by mounting competition from external players and the continued effects of austerity measures by the UK government.

The level of market share concentration in the Computer & Gaming Product Retailers industry is high. The industry is characterised by a few dominant high street retail operations and a number of small, niche operators. Major companies include Dixons Retail (PCWorld), GAME Group and Apple.
