BRIEF: Gadsden ISD schools under precautionary lockdown after Connecticut school shooting

Dec 14, 2012 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The 22 schools in the Gadsden Independent School District in New Mexico are under lockdown today -- the last day of the semester -- because of the school shootings in Connecticut, officials said.

Luis Villalobos, a public relations consultant with the district, said the superintendent ordered the lockdown as a precautionary measure after a gunman opened fire in a Connecticut elementary school earlier today. The shooting left 27 people dead, including 18 children.

"Even though the incident happened very far away, we wanted to make sure that all our students on their last day of the semester remained safe," Villalobos said.

He said the lockdown has no relation or connection to the incident in Connecticut, but that it's a "good precautionary measure that also serves as a good training opportunity for the schools." Villalobos said that parents should not panic about the lockdown and that students will be released as usual.

The school district has schools in across Southern New Mexico, including Sunland Park, Vado and Chaparal.
