Pacheco girls stumble against Kimball

Dec 13, 2012 (Los Banos Enterprise (Los Banos - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Pacheco High School's girls basketball team took an early lead on Kimball High School's before the Jaguars took over to win 43-19.

Pacheco had the lead after the first quarter on a Geor-cion Hymes layup, and a flurry of missed buckets and turnovers to start the second quarter made it look like it would be a low-scoring game.

But Kimball's Andrea Barajas hit paydirt to put Kimball up 9-8 and the Jaguars were off to the races. Kimball outscored Pacheco 14-4 in the second quarter and 13-3 in the fourth.

Kimball's Allison Schmidt led all scorers with 17 points, and Alexis Clark added 13. Guard Samantha Rodriguez led the Panthers with 8 points as Pacheco dropped to 3-4.

LB third in Chowchilla The Los Banos girls hoops team dropped a 45-27 semifinal matchup to Patterson last Friday in Chowchilla. The Tigers settled for third after defeating Dos Palos 35-28 on Saturday.

"When we lost against Patterson, we probably shot about 15 percent from the floor," Los Banos coach Danny Crosby said. "We scored 2 points in the first minute of the game and then we didn't score again until 3 minutes left in the second.

"We've been struggling to score points in crucial parts of the game." The lack of scoring has the Tigers re-evaluating its offensive game plan -- without a dominant post player, LB has relied more on its long-range shooting.

"We have some 3-point shooters, and I don't know if we want to live and die by the 3," Crosby said. "If those aren't falling, we have to rebound, and we don't have the dominant post players." Add to that, junior Savannah Pena came up with an injury in her side and will miss two weeks, leaving Michelle Gutierrez and Kylie Greer holding down the paint.

"That will hinder us a little. We have a big tournament coming up, so it's going to be hard," Crosby said. "We're in desperate mode, may call up a couple of JV players to help us out while she's out." LB hit the road Tuesday and put up just 23 points in a 44-23 loss to Madera, but Crosby thinks the engine just needs a tuneup.

"We're not in panic mode yet -- we've just got to make a few adjustments and hopefully fix the problems we have," Crosby said. "Not just put a Band-aid on things but actually fix it. We haven't had a whole lot of practice time, with kids ill. Now we'll have about four or five days to work on our offense, and hopefully next week when we come out we'll be better prepared."
