BRIEF: Anonymous donor pays off 10 layaway accounts

SEBRING, Dec 11, 2012 (Highlands Today - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Remember last year when anonymous donors across the country paid off Christmas layaway accounts of absolute strangers.

This year, Highlands County's own Secret Santa, who incidentally is a woman, helped 10 families who had layaway accounts at Sebring's Kmart.

Manager Tom Kibble, who would only give the Sebring woman's first name as Alice, said she came in to donate $1,000 but ended up paying $2,000 when she found out the number of delinquent layaway accounts.

"It kind of gives you a warm feeling that people care," said Kibble, who wanted to make sure that the woman got some recognition even though she wanted to remain anonymous.

He said Alice had done this last year, as well.

These families, who had fallen behind on their payments for whatever reason, now have the overdue amounts paid off.

While Kibble doesn't know exactly what had been on layaway, he said most of the things people typically buy at this time are Christmas-related such as toys and clothes.

Kibble said he was going to wait for the beneficiaries to come into the store and hear the good news.
