ELON, Dec 04, 2012 (The News & Observer (Raleigh - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NBC news anchor Brian Williams will be the featured speaker at Elon University's 123rd commencement on May 25. His son, Doug Williams, is expected to be among the graduating class.

Williams was named anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News in 2004 and was named him one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine in 2006.

His list of accolades includes 11 Edward R. Murrow Awards, 12 Emmy Awards, the duPont-Columbia University Award, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and the George Foster Peabody Award.

Williams is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

He's a familiar face at Elon, having chaired the advisory board to Elon's School of Communications and, in 2011, he moderated a special Convocations for Honors with a distinguished panel of guests exploring future decisions that could effect major issues in America.

Williams was a firefighter for several years in his hometown of Middletown, N.J. before attending Brookdale Community College, Catholic University and George Washington University.

The Elon ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the historic campus location known as "Under the Oaks," in front of West Residence Hall.
