Georgia Gives Day raises money for local, statewide nonprofits

Dec 04, 2012 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Several dozen local nonprofit organizations are among the beneficiaries of Georgia's inaugural statewide online fundraising event Thursday.

Georgia Gives Day, a 24-hour flash giving event organized by the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, is modeled after similar programs in Seattle and Minnesota that raised more than $15 million.

"It's designed to spotlight the nonprofits in each of our communities across the state," said Andrew Horn, the vice president of marketing for Georgia Center for Nonprofits. "We're looking for a very, very strong first year in Georgia.

A single day of giving concentrates fundraising efforts for food banks, children's services, animal shelters, arts groups, health clinics and other nonprofits and helps raise awareness of their individual missions, Horn said. Participating nonprofits range from small groups to large organizations that work locally or statewide.

To give, donors visit the Georgia Gives Day Web site, www.gagivesday.org, and search for a nonprofit by ZIP code, county, type of organization or by name. One hundred percent of each donation goes directly to the nonprofit.

Georgia Gives Day is Thursday, but the Web site has been accepting donations for several weeks. So far, more than $250,000 has been raised.
