Canada : TELUS invests $2.2 million to bring wireless service to Hwy 1 between Malakwa and Revelstoke [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) As part of a strategic partnership with the Province, TELUS is investing $2.2 million to bring new wireless coverage to more than 35 kilometres of difficult terrain along Highway 1 between Malakwa and Revelstoke.

The first of two sites bringing coverage to the area, located about 30 kilometres west of Revelstoke, is now live. TELUS expects that the second site, north of Mt. Griffin Ecological Reserve, will go live within the next month. Together, the sites will bring more than 35 kilometres of wireless service to residents, businesses and travellers along Highway 1 between Malakwa and Revelstoke.

At TELUS, we know how important wireless services are, and continue to make significant investments in our networks to bring them to our customers travelling Highway 1 in British Columbia and across Canada, said Steve Jenkins, TELUS general manager for the Southern Interior. Our significant investment in a site serving Highway 1 gives motorists, as well as area residents and businesses, the convenience of making hands-free wireless calls along a well-travelled stretch of highway, expands access to 911, and allows for great broadband service where it may not be possible to build wired Internet access.

The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia agreement signed with the Province of B.C. early last year. Under the terms of the contract TELUS will connect more than 1,700 kilometres of highway with wireless service.

These new wireless sites are great news for everyone who travels one of BC s most important highways for goods and services, tourists and local residents in the Revelstoke area, said Citizens Services and Open Government Minister Ben Stewart. We re working together with Telus to better connect citizens while helping to improve public safety along B.C. s highways.

This significant investment is part of $3 billion in infrastructure and facilities upgrades being made across British Columbia through 2014 and builds upon the $26 billion TELUS has already invested in operations and technology throughout the province since 2000.

TELUS is a leading national telecommunications company in Canada, with $10.8 billion of annual revenue and 13.0 million customer connections including 7.6 million wireless subscribers, 3.4 million wireline network access lines, 1.3 million Internet subscribers and more than 635,000 TELUS TV customers. Led since 2000 by President and CEO, Darren Entwistle, TELUS provides a wide range of communications products and services including wireless, data, Internet protocol (IP), voice, television, entertainment and video.
