ViaSat to Provide Secure Mobile Device Technology to U.S. Marine Corps

Dec 04, 2012 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- ViaSat Inc. announced that the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command has chosen the company to engineer advanced information security into common, off-the-shelf mobile devices.

According to a release, armed with their own smartphone and ViaSat security software, warfighters can become a sensor on the network, contributing information to multiply force effectiveness at a fraction of the cost, with faster network access, and more capability compared to traditional handheld radios. The contract award includes a series of progressive developments, with an initial award of approximately $2.4 million and options for further engineering and design.

Adding ViaSat cyber and information security to commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) smartphones and tablets can enable personnel to communicate securely over 3G/4G/LTE cellular and Wi-Fi networks, store sensitive data, and protect their devices against malware attacks. While this development is for tactical warfighters, the ViaSat system is designed to provide secure communication of sensitive information for any government or commercial customer.

"People want to bring the capabilities of their mobile devices right along with them on their missions," said Jon Korecki, executive director of Secure Network Systems at ViaSat. "We have a number of ongoing developments to deliver a secure mobile enterprise system that can work those devices seamlessly into a variety of carrier networks." The first phase of the U.S Marine contract calls for ViaSat to develop and deliver 150 mobile proof-of-concept devices for Department of Defense (DoD) testing and integration. The development is expected to be complete by spring of 2013 with the new secure mobile system available on any Android device.

ViaSat delivers fast, secure communications, Internet, and network access to virtually any location for consumers, governments, enterprise, and the military.
