Aetna Chairman and CEO at mHealth Summit: Sneak Peek of "Passage" Virtual Fitness App; Eight New Partners Added to the CarePass™ Platform

HARTFORD, Conn. --(Business Wire)--

Aetna (NYSE: AET) Chairman, CEO and President Mark T. Bertolini today offered a sneak peek of Aetna's new fitness app - Passage - during his keynote address at the mHealth Summit in Washington, D.C. Developed in collaboration with Microsoft (News - Alert), the app transforms a routine walk, run, or bike ride into virtual exploration. It is expected to be live in the Windows Store later this month. The Passage app will be integrated into Aetna's CarePassTM platform, which offers simple, convenient access to some of the best health and wellness apps in the marketplace.

In his keynote address before an audience of more than 3,000, Bertolini offered his vision for a more convenient, better connected health care system through the use of technology by both consumers and physicians. "We are harnessing the power of technology to connect fragmented health data and turn it into cohesive, relevant, actionable information," said Bertolini. "CarePass is just one example of our efforts to empower consumers to manage their whole health, on their terms, when and where it suits them."

In addition, Bertolini shared that eight new partners have been added to Aetna's CarePass platform, enabling consumers to share information across a wider range of apps and create a personalized, integrated experience to manage their whole health, from getting care, to staying well, to earning rewards, all with one sign-on. On the onsumer side, new fitness partners include ACTIVE Network, RunKeeper and Strava, while new nutrition partners include BettrLife and Sparkpeople. In addition to these consumer partners, new partners for the CarePass developer portal are Earndit, FoodEssentials and Personal.com.

Passage: From Treadmill to Virtual Explorer

The new Passage app, developed by the Aetna CarePass team in collaboration with Microsoft, transforms a routine workout into virtual exploration. The app takes a boring treadmill run or bike ride around the neighborhood, and transports the user to the city of their dreams - Barcelona, New York or Rome. For the first Windows app release, at the end of a workout, users simply sync their workout info to the app, and unlock a virtual experience that offers real-time photos from the chosen location, their progress along the route, restaurant recommendations and reviews, historical information, and the ability to invite friends along for the journey. Future mobile versions of the app will allow for real- time engagement with the selected city.

Passage is free, and can be downloaded from the Windows Store in December. It is expected to be available for Apple and Android (News - Alert) devices in early 2013. Passage users must register for a free CarePass account, which will allow them to share their Passage information with all the apps on the CarePass platform.
