Health Information Exchange of Montana "Saves Lives at the Speed of Light" With Cyan Network

PETALUMA, CA, Nov 28, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Cyan today announced that Health Information Exchange of Montana (HIEM) has selected Blue Planet software and Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms in order to build a private 425-mile fiber optic network. HIEM is a consortium of hospitals and community health centers chartered to increase network capacity for improved medical access, collaboration, and the delivery of health information services to residents of northwest Montana. The private fiber network, built with Cyan software, hardware, and services, dramatically reduces the time required to perform virtually any healthcare function dealing with remote access to information, thereby improving productivity and -- in many cases -- saving lives.

Instead of leasing fiber from service providers and deploying routers at each of its 19 medical service sites, HIEM elected to build its own fiber network and eliminate routers. This strategy allowed it to substantially reduce costs and even lease excess capacity to service providers and partners in the region. HIEM deployed Cyan's Z33 packet-optical transport platforms (P-OTPs) to connect 19 rural medical sites to a central healthcare facility in Kalispell, and uses Blue Planet software for management and performance verification, and Cyan PRO for the outsourcing of its network operations center (NOC).

The Cyan solution allowed HIEM to upgrade its network from existing T1 services to vastly superior 100Mbps network performance at ultra-low costs.

"Cyan helped HIEM improve healthcare services and the quality of life in some of the most rural areas of Montana, especially regarding trauma care. Activity that used to take an hour or two -- sending x-rays, diagnosing injuries, consulting with experts and initiating patient transportation -- can now be done in seconds or minutes," said Kip Smith, executive director at HIEM. "Cyan was a true partner throughout the network design and implementation process. They helped us meet unforeseen challenges and create economically viable solutions quickly and easily using Blue Planet planning and management apps." "For healthcare delivery organizations like HIEM, the stakes are enormous," said Eric Clelland, co-founder and CMO at Cyan. "This is especially true in the geographic region HIEM operates in -- large distances and remote, difficult to access locations place a premium on a network able to deliver high reliability and extremely low latency. By building its own network, HIEM is ultimately able to improve the quality of life for its patients." Cyan's solutions also enabled HIEM to increase the transmission rate of electronic medical record systems, saving a local clinic with five physicians 2,000 hours each year. Additionally, the network improves image resolution in x-rays and CT scans that are delivered from HIEM member Kalispell Regional Medical Center's remote mammography coach so that healthcare professionals are able to more rapidly diagnose and prescribe treatment to rural patients.

Going forward, HIEM plans to expand connectivity for professional healthcare education through the University of Montana, Salish Kootenai College, Flathead Valley Community College and Blackfeet Community College as well as adding additional healthcare sites.
