Two quit public posts in Preston

KINGWOOD, Nov 27, 2012 (The Dominion Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Preston County Commissioners heard of two resignations Monday and agreed to convey any ownership rights to a controversial roadway to the Bretz Community Association.

County Litter Control Officer Rich McCrobie has tendered his resignation, effective Dec. 31. Commissioners said they would advertise the part-time position, which pays $15,000 per year, as soon as possible. McCrobie has held the position since July 2009.

"We owe him a debt of gratitude for all he's done for us," said Commissioner Vicki Cole.

She said she hopes the position can be filled soon. "We can get working on that immediately," said Commission President Craig Jennings.

"It'd be a good job for somebody that wants it. And they'll have plenty to do. I appreciated the opportunity to try to do something to clean up the county," McCrobie said.

Holly Royce, director of Community Corrections, has also tendered her resignation, Chief Probation Officer Crystal Thomas said. Royce's resignation is effective Dec. 21. Thomas said the local Community Corrections board has agreed to promote Assistant Director Jared Wharram and hire a new assistant. The regional board meets Dec. 12 and must approve the promotion.

Also Monday, commissioners met in executive session with Prosecuting Attorney Mel Snyder. When the session ended, commissioners voted to approve an order prepared by Snyder. The order is intended to turn over its interests in Evergreen Drive, a roadway that is the subject of a civil suit, to the Bretz Community Association.

"The Commission notes that it does not believe that it has any interest in this road which by law was conveyed to the West Virginia Division of Highways by Act of the Legislature in 1933," Snyder wrote.

The roadway was conveyed to the commission by Elkins Coal and Coke to provide access to the Bretz School, which is now owned by the Bretz Community Association, he wrote. Snyder was authorized by commissioners to prepare a quitclaim deed to the property.
