Praiseworthy: Nov. 26, 2012: Supporting the UCSC ArboretumNov 26, 2012 (Santa Cruz Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Supporting the UCSC Arboretum Thank you for your coverage from the Santa Cruz Sentinel over the years, and recently for printing the articles and photos about the UCSC Arboretum's 28th Gift and Wreath Sale. We also could not have done it without the help of our wonderful volunteers and visiting artists. Models are all too rare these days for civil discourse in the face of public disagreement. I am proud of my city for being able to model this over the past eight months, culminating in the recent City Council decision to protect the integrity and safety of a neighborhood in the face of a major development. Our neighborhood group engaged in respectful communication with all constituencies including the developers, the Planning Commission, City Council, city staff and each other. City Council members heard from stakeholders with widely differing perspectives, and always demonstrated thoughtfulness, respect and diplomacy. Each City Council member carefully weighed the issues at hand and voted based on extensive analysis and the guiding principles of our city plan. Leadership listened, and this neighbor applauds the courage and foresight shown. Here's to collaboration, communication, compromise and civil discourse in our community. Wendy Baxter, Santa Cruz Community has real role model While others may pontificate from behind a desk, Fe Silva Robles puts feet on the ground and gets something amazing done. The third annual Latino Role Model Conference at Harbor High School on Saturday was another example of her remarkable efforts creating a life-changing experience for students. The community thanks you Fe. Santa Cruz City Schools is very lucky to have you! Janet Swann, Santa Cruz Thanks to fall soccer league The youth fall soccer season ended this weekend. I want to thank Lea Holloway, the president of the Santa Cruz league, the others serving in leadership positions, the volunteer coaches, parents, players, refs, and the schools and parks that allowed us to use their fields. The league is run by volunteers who give up a tremendous amount of their time to coordinate the season for our children, adolescents and young adults. My two daughters (9 and 12) had a wonderful time, and I am especially grateful to their coaches and the players and parents on their teams for keeping the games fun for all involved. Margarita Azmitia, Santa Cruz Recognizing three kind gentlemen Recently I went to the DMV to renew my drivers license. My age requiring me to take a written test along with an eye test. I have been very uneasy about doing it but as my time was growing short before expiration date, I had to go. The first kind gentleman that helped took the information, gave me the eye test and assured me that I would pass. The second kind young man took my picture and handed me the test. The third gentleman helped correct my test and much to my surprise, I was given a temporary license until my regular one comes in the mail. They were so kind to a very nervous older, (very old) lady who hates to take tests. Thank you three for making my day so great.
