The Vine hosting Thanksgiving dinnerMCVEIGH, Ky., Nov 22, 2012 (Williamson Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- As the women, wearing matching t-shirts, fill their buggies with enough groceries for several hundred Thanksgiving dinners, they are approached by a woman who asked why they were buying so much food. When they answer that they were shopping to provide dinner for at least 400 less fortunate people at Thanksgiving, the woman gives them $10, explaining that she had recently lost her job, but wants to help as much as she can. This spirit of generosity is the founding principal of The Vine, a group made up of members from several area churches who gather each week to cook and deliver meals to low income areas and homes. Judy Scott, a career cook at Belfry High School and at the Pike County jail, is one of the volunteers with The Vine. She says she has always fed people. "I come from a big family," Scott said. "We all love to cook. To me, it is natural, its a God-giving thing to do, to feed people. I hope people see Jesus in this." The ministry began last January, the brainchild of Dennis Fite. From humble beginnings, The Vine now prepares between 175 and 200 meals each week. Food and money comes through individuals, businesses and church groups. The Vine also brings blankets, clothing and food to people who may be indigent. The Vine has seen an increase in the number of people who are having a hard time making ends meet in today's economy. "The number of people we serve is growing," Amanda Hackney said. "Judy and I starting delivering about 30 meals to homes, now we have about 70 homes we go to each week." Amanda, Judy and Sarah Hensley say there are several people who are the backbone of The Vine, including Dennis and Norene Fite. Thanksgiving dinner will be served from noon until 3 p.m. Thursday at the McVeigh Baptist Church. Transportation will be provided for those who need a ride to the church. Dinners can be taken out for those who cannot travel. "We do this for the glory of God," Amanda said.
