Voice TV launches hall unit for Paethongtarn

Nov 22, 2012 (Bangkok Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Voice TV, the satellite TV business owned by the Shinawatra family, will focus on news and online media next year to attract younger viewers, while it will launch event hall rentals to accommodate the entry of Paethongtarn, the youngest daughter of ousted premier Thaksin, to the company.

The event hall rental department is being created for Paethongtarn Shinawatra. Previously she ran a nail shop with elder sister Pinthongtha.

Songsak Premsuk, the president of Voice TV, said in three years Voice TV has reached up to 18 million households through PSI, Grammy's GMM Z, TrueVisions and internet TV.

Its Facebook Fan Page has 120,000 likes, second among Thai media after Thai Rath newspaper.

"We will have more programmes about lifestyle and entertainment next year. Moreover, we will start the event hall rental business as a place for the younger generation to express their ideas and creativity, or for those who want to organise events in a chic and exclusive space," he said.

Miss Paethongtarn, as executive event hall director, will oversee this new unit. Called Voice Space, the event hall covering 1,250 square metres at the headquarters of Voice TV on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road can cater to 1,000 guests.

"The events can be broadcast on some Voice TV programmes or the website. We will give the priority to university students to showcase works," she said.

Voice TV will assist university students in arranging their shows and finding sponsors. The station invested 80 million baht to build the event hall with a state-of-the-art sound system.

The first event was a fashion show organised by Voice TV yesterday to introduce the hall to 60 organisers. The company will organise its annual short movie, music and fashion festivals there. Voice TV had two organisers sign contracts to use the space at its event hall.

"We will use the event hall business as a tool to expand our TV business. We don't expect a big profit, but we are confident we can break even within three years," she said.

Mr Songsak said Voice Space has no direct competitors on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road except the event hall at CentralPlaza Lardprao, which has a very big space for multi-purpose events.

Voice TV is also interested in bidding for a digital TV licence next year to upgrade its station to a free TV channel. Its revenue expanded by over 100% this year and will reach 300 million baht next year, he said.

"We hope our TV operation will break even in the fifth year by 2014. The trends are very good as big companies are spending more on ads on satellite TV," said Mr Songsak.
