Rangel: Thankful For Today, Hopeful For Tomorrow

Nov 21, 2012 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- New York, NY- Congressman Charles B. Rangel released the following statement in recognition of Thanksgiving, which will be observed this year on Thursday, November 22, 2012: "I join millions of Americans in sharing our blessings and celebrating them with loved ones, family and friends on this special holiday. This is a time to thank our soldiers, veterans and their families for keeping us safe, and extend ourselves to neighbors who are in need.

Everyday I see examples of courage and the resilience of people in our community, such as Harlem's own community leader, Mrs. Betty Park, President of Manna's Soul Food Restaurant. Mrs. Park will be serving free hot Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, November 22, at the National Action Network Headquarters in Harlem (206 West 145th Street), from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Since 1984, she and her family have generously contributed to various organizations, charities, and scholarship funds throughout the community.

Hurricane Sandy has left many families in the Northeast without shelter, clothing and food. In the spirit of Thanksgiving and the start of the holiday season, I hope we can reach out to people who need assistance. Regardless of one's faith, I believe we all have a moral obligation to help those who are hungry, poor, aged, and sick.

I would like to recognize the following organizations for their dedication and compassion to help the most vulnerable in our Congressional District: The Bailey House, Chambers Memorial Baptist Church, Community Kitchen of Harlem, Harlem Community Nutritional Pantry, Harlem Dowling-West Side Center for Child and Community Services, Iris House, Yorkville Common Pantry, Community Association of Progressive Dominicans, Community Center of Immigrants , Westside Federation for Seniors And Supportive Housing, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, St. Cecilia's Parish , Scan-NY/LA Guardia Memorial, Good Shepherd Church, The Riverside Church, The West Side Campaign Against Hunger, National Action Network, Children's Aid Society, Ricardo's Steakhouse, Harlem Children's Zone, NBA Players Association, Don King Productions, TLC NYS NAACP Conference, Fairway Market, Green Market, Sylvia's Restaurant, Feed the Children, Inc., Goddard Riverside Community Center, and Friendly Hands Ministry.

I am privileged to represent New York's 15th Congressional District. As we embrace the season with hope for a better future for our community and country, I wish you a very happy and safe Thanksgiving."
