Central rallies behind queen

Nov 19, 2012 (St. Joseph News-Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Breyonna Nelson is a walking bundle of kindness. The 18-year-old Central High School senior always has a smile and a hello for everyone. And she's always willing to help someone.

So when Diane Slawson asked some Central High School cheerleaders and football players to come up with an idea to help the popular special-needs student win the military ball queen title, there was no hesitation.

"She definitely deserved it," said Cecil Bratton, a Central senior and football player. "Whenever I heard there's an opportunity to help Bre win, I definitely wanted to help out." Ms. Slawson, Bre's personal helper at the school, enlisted the help of Jenna Oswald, a Central cheerleader, to come up with a cheer. Together with help from other students, they came up with a 43-second YouTube video called "Vote 4 Bre Nelson Military Ball Queen." The video, which already has over 90 views, helped Breyonna win the popular vote. She will serve as queen at the ROTC Military Ball this Saturday evening.

Breyonna said she was glad to win, but was also surprised.

"There were like four other girls," she said. "It was a popularity vote. You had to be in the ROTC. It was super." Jenna said she was more than happy to do it for someone who was so kind to everyone. It also says a lot about the students at her school.

"(Bre) is a very kind person and everybody here likes to help out each other, and whenever there is an opportunity to, we all jump at it because we love to help each other out," she said.

Ms. Slawson said she, too, was impressed by the way the student body rallied around Bre.

"It comes from the heart and it completely restores my faith in kids. You just don't think you'll see that," Ms. Slawson said.
