Blood sent to Midland, critical need to replenish stockNov 16, 2012 (Lubbock Avalanche-Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- United Blood Services of West Texas is in critical need to supply Type O-negative blood for Midland victims and is in strong need of all other blood types. United sent the majority of their stock of Type O-negative and Type A-negative blood to Midland after news of a train hitting a parade float Thursday afternoon. On Friday, Les Long, a spokesman with the blood bank, said United is unable to fulfill hospital orders. "We are now officially on critical appeal for O-negative and on a strong need for all blood types because we sell blood to Midland," said Long. "We are being unable to fulfill hospital orders." Brandon Baker, director of donor recruitment, said he is encouraging locals to donate blood. Though Type O-negative and Type A-negative blood was initially used, all blood types are needed for the victims, he said. "We imagine the victims weren't able to tell anybody what blood type they were, so we sent over the bulk of our O-negative because it can be given to anybody," he said. United Blood Services is on 48th Street and University Avenue. Walk-ins are accepted, but making an appointment is advised, said Baker. The blood bank will be open Friday 9-4 p.m., Saturday 9-2 p.m., Monday and Wednesday 9-4:30 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday 11-7 p.m. To make an appointment, go to bloodhero.com or call 797-6804.
