Business must adapt, improve in permanently changing timesNov 14, 2012 (Clay Center Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Small businesses need to adapt to permanently changing technologies in order to remain viable in the future marketplace, Gary Shorman, CEO of Hays-based Eagle Communications, Inc., told Clay Center Chamber members during the organization's annual dinner meeting last night. He said Facebook is changing how customers use media is becoming important in whether a business is visible or not. The CCCHS graduate told the group that there are 2,780 Facebook users in the Clay Center area and some 6,000 users in a 25 mile radius from town. "In the business world you have to be in that space," Shorman said. Eagle provides cable television to Clay Center and 29 other communities in Kansas and Colorado. Shorman said the employee-owned company has programs to encourage growth in the communities it represents including a program "Don't Get Run Over by Digital Business" to teach small business operators. "New technology isn't easy," Shorman said, "and we won't have help getting to know how to use (them)." He said the ability of a small business to serve its customers will become more and more critical. He recommended business adapt to change by deciding to "continuously improve a little bit every year connecting with customers. Shorman said his company tries to improve "10 percent a year." Shorman has been president and CEO of Eagle since 1997 and is a member of the board of directors. The firm has 28 broadcast properties in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado. Shorman, who started his broadcast career in Clay Center at the then newly operational KCLY, was awarded the Kansas Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award and was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcaster's Hall of Fame. ___ (c)2012 the Clay Center Dispatch (Clay Center, Kan.)
