New Altima Board with Cypress's EZ-USB® FX3™ USB 3.0 Controller Connects to Altera FPGA Development Kits for Uncompressed Video Streaming

YOKOHAMA, Japan --(Business Wire)--

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (News - Alert) (NASDAQ: CY) and Altima Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Macnica, Inc., today announced a USB 3.0 interface board that delivers uncompressed video streaming for development of a broad range of applications, here at the Embedded Technology 2012 Conference and Exhibition. Altima developed the new USB 3.0 Interface Board (ALTHSMCUSB3) leveraging Cypress's EZ-USB® FX3™ USB 3.0 controller to enable uncompressed streaming of 1080-pixel video at an industry-leading transfer rate of 60 frames per second (fps). Altima and Cypress are demonstrating the board streaming high-resolution video from an HDMI source to a PC in the Cypress booth (number B-24) here from November 14-16.

The USB 3.0 Interface Board integrates a USB Video Class (UVC) reference design, developed by Macnica, which maximizes the performance of Cypress's EZ-USB FX3 controller to provide uncompressed high-resolution video transfer. The board connects with multiple Altera (News - Alert) FPGA development kits to enable flexible, low-cost development and evaluation of embedded applications with SuperSpeed USB 3.0 data transfer. Altima is now accepting orders for the board, which is expected to be available in January 2013. More information on the USB 3.0 Interface Board is available at www.altima.jp/products/devkit/altima/usb3_board.html.

"With its data transfer rates up to 5 Gbps, USB 3.0 is rapidly gaining adoption in personal computers, PC peripherals, and digital consumer products, and is now expanding into industrial automation applications such as machine vision cameras," said Toru Saito, Executive Vice President at Altima. "Our USB 3.0 Interface Board combines the industry-leading performance of Cypress's EZ-USB FX3 USB 3.0 controller with the design flexibility of Altera's FPGAs to enable efficient development of video-streaming applications for a broad range of these markets."

"We worked closely with Altima to deliver optimal video transfer performance for their USB 3.0 Interface Board, and are pleaed to partner with them at Embedded Technology 2012 to demonstrate the board's groundbreaking capabilities," said Kazuyoshi Yamada, vice president of Japan Sales for Cypress. "We look forward to growing EZ-USB FX3 adoption in Japan with Altima's help in reaching new applications and markets."

Cypress's EZ-USB FX3 is the industry's only programmable USB 3.0 peripheral controller. It is equipped with a fully configurable General Programmable Interface (GPIF™ II), which can be programmed in 8-, 16- and 32-bit configurations with data rates as high as 400 Megabytes per second. GPIF II enables FX3 to interface directly to any processor, ASIC or FPGA. The GPIF Designer, a graphical user interface (GUI) tool kit, helps system designers to configure the GPIF interface to their needs. More information on Cypress's EZ-USB FX3 controller is available at www.cypress.com/go/usb.

The USB 3.0 Interface Board supports Altera's High-Speed Mezzanine Connector (HSMC) via the EZ-USB FX3 controller. The USB 3.0 Interface Board will support Altera's development kits for its lower-cost Cyclone® IV GX FPGAs and also for its Cyclone V family, Arria® series, and Stratix® series, as well as its Cyclone V GX base-board.
