People & Places: Tulsa group hosts Mad Women event inspired by 'Mad Men'Nov 14, 2012 (Tulsa World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- "Mad Men" is a popular AMC series about an advertising business in New York. Now we can meet some of the distaff side of the ad equation when the Tulsa Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications introduces us to some of Tulsa's own Mad Women, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Tulsa Press Club. A group of advertising women will give us an inside look at what it was like breaking into that business in the 1960s and 1970s. Speakers will include Phyllis Radcliffe, former vice president for public relations and advertising at First National Bank; Lee Clark Johns, president of Strategic Communication Inc.; Ann Metcalf, a semi-retired public relations and marketing consultant; Ann Patton, writer and consultant and former Tulsa World reporter; and Peggy Striegel, owner of Striegel Advertising. These women were the real copywriters and communicators that "Mad Men" characters such as Peggy Olson or Megan Draper represent, said Missy Kruse, program co-chairwoman. With the help of the Tulsa Press Club, AWC members and guests will experience Mad Men-era appetizers and a special Mad Women Martini, concocted by the Tulsa Press Club's general manager, Shaun Lee. "We encourage everyone to dress Mad Women style. We'll be awarding prizes for the most authentic attire," said Sara Delgado, program co-chairwoman. "If you were not around 40 years ago, you're in for a few eye-openers, Kruse said. "These women truly broke new ground in the business world and the advertising, public relations and news business." Reservations are required, and seating is limited. Members may attend for $25, nonmembers, $30. A portion of the proceeds will go to the AWC communications scholarship fund, Delgado said.
