Holcomb school board considers remodeling options

Nov 13, 2012 (The Garden City Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Members of the Holcomb Board of Education on Monday viewed carpet, paint and tile selections that will be used in the Holcomb Elementary School remodel.

USD 363 Superintendent Jean Rush presented samples that were chosen for the school, after she and board member Matt Jones met with Julie Hopkins, an interior designer contracted through Gibson, Mancini, Carmichael and Nelson Architects of Garden City, the firm handling the remodel.

Rush said that they opted for carpet tiles and made the choice between two designs -- a two-tone brown and a gray with subtle lines of blue, red and yellow in it.

"We chose this one because it had that elementary flair to it -- a little different, but we liked the primary colors that were running through there, so it has an elementary feel to it," she said, referring to the latter of the two choices.

In addressing a concern about the durability of the carpet squares edges, Jones said, "They say you don't see it, and if you have one tile that goes bad, you just pull it up and replace it with another one." Rush also showed board members tan and gray wall tiles, as well as the black, orange and off-white colors that will be used in the door frames, keeping in line with the school's colors. For the restrooms, there also will be brown and orange tiles, with green and blue accent tiles.

The next step in the remodel is for acceptance of bids from general contractors.

"Bids are out and are due back Dec. 4, I think at 2 p.m. is the bid opening here. We'll send that information to the facilities committee for you guys to be here and anybody else that wants to attend. He anticipates seven to nine contractors," Rush said, referring to Kent Carmichael of the architectural firm. "We hope to get quite a few bids to look at." The board also held a closed session in which they agreed to hire two new staff members for Holcomb's middle school: Erica Spangler, as assistant coach of Odyssey of the Mind, and Ken Beck, as assistant coach of boys basketball.
