Area businesses donate van to Meals On Wheels

Nov 14, 2012 (Tyler Morning Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Local businesses collaborated to donate a refurbished van to Meals On Wheels Ministry of East Texas on Monday.

"We are always so impressed by businesses and individuals in our community who take this sort of initiative and give back what they can," said Meals On Wheels president and CEO, Mike Powell, in a news release. "It takes all of us partnering together to 'feed the need' in the communities we serve." The refurbished 2007 GMC Savannah van was donated by Design Center, Edge Medical Supply and Hall Buick GMC. The businesses also donated more than $1,500 as well as a donation of canned food items.

Meals On Wheels Ministry currently serves meals to more than 3,000 seniors and homebound individuals in 30 communities across six counties, including Gregg, Henderson, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood counties.

The gift was made possible by the hard work and generosity of all three businesses, said Charles Boyte, operations director for Edge Medical Supply.

"Design Center did all the graphics," he said in the news release. "It was one of our vans which we retired, and Hall went through from bumper to bumper; new tires, new brakes, everything you could possibly imagine." This is the second vehicle donation to be given to Meals On Wheels by the group. The $1,500 is enough to feed one client for an entire year, according to the news release.

"This is a way for us to give back to an organization," Boyte said.
