BRIEF: Southwest side break-in suspect arrested at gunpoint, police say

Nov 12, 2012 (The Wisconsin State Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Madison man who allegedly broke into a southwest side convenience store early Saturday morning was arrested at gunpoint walking down a nearby street.

Scott Alton, 24, was tentatively charged with burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, criminal damage to property and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a news release from Madison Police.

Police responded to a burglary alarm at a Mobil gas station, 901 S. Gammon Road, at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday.

"Officers found a door window shattered, with a fire extinguisher lying nearby," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

A gas station employee was called to the scene and showed officers surveillance video.

"A description of the suspect was sent out, and he was spotted walking near Park Edge Drive and Park Ridge Drive," DeSpain said. "An officer arrested him at gunpoint." Alton said he had been drinking with friends at the New Town Pub, except for the fact that tavern has been closed for months.

"He changed his story when the officer pointed out that fact, along with having the burglary captured on the video," DeSpain said.

Alton allegedly had nine packs of cigarettes in his possession along with a knife in his pocket which he said he carries for protection.
