BRIEF: Micron considers options for its struggling LED business [The Idaho Statesman](Idaho Statesman (Boise) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 09--Micron Technology Inc. said Friday that it is reviewing options for a struggling unit in Boise that Micron created to manufacture light-emitting diodes. Micron received $5 million in federal economic-stimulus money for LED research and development under the 2009 economic-stimulus law. "The market for the LED business is not faring well," Micron spokesman Dan Francisco told the Idaho Statesman. "Micron is looking at its business options, which includes looking for partners." LEDs are more energy-efficient, long-lasting and reliable than most traditional lighting. Micron started moving into LEDs as a way to diversify at a time when Micron was laying off Boise workers. The company ended chip manufacturing in Boise in 2009. Micron has reported on its website that it plans to begin producing LEDs in 2013 for manufacturers of lighting equipment. The LEDs are based on the memory-chip manufacturer's semiconductor technology.
