BACKGROUND:
|
|
Saturday's event marks the second boat-building session for
Metropolitan's 11th annual Solar Cup program. A first
group of 18 teams built their boats last Saturday (Nov. 3). Solar
Cup concludes with three days of racing May 17-19, 2013 at Lake
Skinner near Temecula in southwest Riverside County. Teams from 40
high schools in Los Angeles, Orange (News - Alert), Riverside, San Bernardino,
San Diego and Ventura counties are participating in the 2012-13
event.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Solar Cup, which began in 2002 with just eight teams and about 80
students, has become the nation's largest solar-powered boat
competition. Along the way, about 8,300 students have participated
in Solar Cup competitions, which allow students to apply their
skills in math, physics, engineering and communications, while
learning about Southern California's water sources, resource
management and alternative energy development.

the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies,
and helps its members to develop increased water conservation,
recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
