295 jobs to be filled at 2 local businesses
Nov 07, 2012 (The Columbus Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Two companies announced plans yesterday to hire a total of nearly 300 employees over the next few months.
Satellite-TV provider Dish Network Corp. will seek to hire 100 customer-service representatives for its Hilliard customer-service center during an open house today.
In addition, Cabela's --the popular hunting, fishing and outdoors retailer --said it's ready to move forward with a previously announced hiring plan and is looking for 195 employees to work at its first Ohio location, to open in the Polaris area in the spring.
The Dish jobs start at $12 an hour, and benefits include medical insurance, profit sharing and tuition reimbursement.
All of Dish Network's 11 service centers are hiring, Dish Network spokesman Aaron Johnson said.
With the new TV season under way, people are watching more, and many people buy new units during the holidays and reappraise their TV provider at the same time. "That adds to the demand for our employees," he said.
Even so, the jobs are not seasonal hires, he said. "These are permanent, full-time jobs. There are opportunities for advancement if folks stay with the company. In fact, a lot of our managers actually started in the front line, working the phones like this, so we value that experience."
Dish Network has been aggressively advertising its new Hopper set-top box, and as a result, it recently reported that subscriber activations rose by 12.7 percent from a year ago, to 14 million customers.
"I don't doubt them when they say these jobs are full time," said Steffanie Wilk, an associate professor in management and human resources at Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business.
At the same time, "there's no question there is high churn in these jobs. Not everybody is cut out to do it, particularly if the big game is on and customers are calling because their service has been interrupted."
At Cabela's, expertise in outdoor activities is something that will be helpful to prospective employees, officials said.
"The ideal candidate is passionate and knowledgeable about the outdoors and enjoys working in the team dynamic," said Jim Daugherty, general manager of the new store, in a statement.
Given the popularity of outdoor pursuits locally, "I think there's going to be plenty of people interested and capable of working at Cabela's," Wilk said.
Cabela's announced in February that it planned to build the 80,000-square-foot-store --midsized for the chain --at the northeast corner of Gemini Place and Lyra Drive in the Polaris Centers development, near I-71.
The location is under construction and on track to open in the spring.
Those interested in Dish jobs can attend a job fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at 3315 Mill Meadow Dr., Hilliard, or visit www.dish.com/hilliard.Cabela's accepts applications at www.cabelas.jobs and will interview candidates from Nov. 27 through Dec. 1.
